Generation C

Where C stands for “Content.”

Because you are reading this on the Web, you probably are already one of the millions of Generation C. This trend covers anyone with any creative talent.  It doesn’t exclude anyone by sex, age or interest.  It’s all about individuals creating tons of generated “content” for using, posting, selling, distributing on the Web. From text, images, audio and video, the mass market are encouraged to use consumer products to create their own “stuff” for the world to view, interact with or buy.

Per trendwatching.com “The two main drivers fuelling this trend are: (1) The creative urges each consumer undeniably possesses. We're all artists, but until now we neither had the guts nor the means to go all out. (2) The manufacturers of content-creating tools, who relentlessly push us to unleash that creativity, using -- of course -- their ever cheaper, ever more powerful gadgets and gizmos. Instead of asking consumers to watch, to listen, to play, to passively consume, the race is on to get them to create, to produce, and to participate.”

Some examples of this phenomenon are: camera phones that encourage consumers to take pictures of everything – everywhere and then post them to dedicated web hosting sites.  It’s the digital printers telling their parent customers that they should be printing out all the photos of the new baby and either printing them out or emailing them directly to grandma and grandpa.  It’s blogging sites that have already attracted over 5 million people to create their own personal diaries online for the world to view (soon to be 10 million). How about the push of cell phone advertisers to have their consumer customers create their own ring tones.
Consider music making software where, even my husband, has created three “party music” CDs for afternoon pool gatherings.

Coming from a creative bent, I personally wholeheartedly support Generation C.  There’s not even enough time in the day to figure out when I can post a new thought to my blog, learn how and do podcasting, publish my own hard cover book of inspirational thoughts using photos from my digital camera.  Wow.
Let's face it . . . the Generation C trend has something to offer all of us.
